History of Kashmir Ep 9: Sheikh Abdulla’s Last Treachery, and Indigenous Armed Struggle by Kashmiris
The complete history of the Kashmir Conflict from 1819-2019, presented in documentary form in Urdu language. The documentary is divided into 11 episodes with a total length of 246 minutes. Our aim is to educate our audience about the centuries long struggle of the Kashmiri people for freedom, which is a cataclysmic event in Islamic and sub-continental history. Events like the Dogra seizure of Kashmir in exchange for money, the heroic Poonch revolt against the Maharaja, the Wars of 1947-48, 1965 and 1999, the barbaric atrocities like the Gauu-kadal massacre and the Kenan-Poshpora incident, efforts of mediators like Owen Dixon to resolve the Kashmir Conflict, and the causes of their failure etc are covered in objective detail with unbiased analysis. From neutral historians like Victoria Schofield, Stanley Wolpert, Christopher Snedden and Brian Cloughley to Pakistani and Indian historians like H.M.Seervai, M.J.Akbar, Karan Singh, Lt.Gen Harbaksh Singh, Lt. Gen. Mahmood Khan, Chaudhry Mohammad Ali etc, the sources used in preparation of this documentary are both impeccable and easily verifiable. Instead of producing a garbled version of history filled with propagandistic bombast, we have striven to uphold the historian’s values of objectivity, neutrality, verifiability and original analysis. We believe that the study of history is essential to the process of forging a national will in pursuit of our national destiny as elaborated by the great philosopher Allama Iqbal. We also are of the opinion that the digital medium is more apt in pursuit of this goal as it is less time consuming and very appealing to our burgeoning youthful population who rely on smart phones more than books. Another hallmark of the present digital era is the easy access to information. Propagandistic polemics may have worked in the past when the masses were unable to verify the authenticity of purported myths peddled in the name of history. Now, anyone can destroy the propagandistic edifice with a simple google search. Keeping this in mind, we have committed ourselves to the search of truth. We have compiled the material for this documentary by consulting historians from various nationalities and reilgions. We have used critical skills like the Socratic method and postulates of historical analysis elucidated by Ibn-e-Khaldun to separate fact from fiction. We are pleased to declare that our efforts have not been in vain and we have succeeded in creating a documentary which will educate the viewer about the history of Kashmir in a matter of few hours whereas if one were to attain a similar academic grasp of this topic using traditional methods, it will take him/her several months to do so! I hope and wish that our humble effort will play a part in triggering the thirst for historical knowledge in Pakistan. The more you know about the past, the better prepared you are for the future. Theodore Roosevelt This is the ninth episode of this series. In this episode we are covering the events in Kashmir between 1965 and 1990. Sheikh Abdullah’s abject servility in front of Indira Gandhi, formation of JKLF and Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, the fraudulent elections of 1987 in Kashmir, and the beginning of the Kashmir insurgency in 1989 are being discussed.
