5 Badetote in NRW: Trotzdem springen viele weiter rein

Many Düsseldorf residents simply jump into the Rhine when it's hot, even though swimming there is prohibited. At Paradiesstrand (Paradise Beach), you can even see families with children in the water – where the current from passing ships can be extremely dangerous. The danger is real: This year, seven people have already died while swimming in North Rhine-Westphalia. Most recently, a 20-year-old jogger drowned in the Rhine-Herne Canal when he tried to cool off after his run. A 27-year-old in Sassenberg and a 26-year-old in Paderborn also lost their lives. Dennis swims in the Rhine regularly and believes he has the danger under control. He says he only goes in up to his knees to cool off and feels safe as long as he knows his limits. The fatal accidents in the region don't deter him. Authorities issue repeated warnings, and cities like Wesel have implemented even more swimming bans. Nevertheless, many underestimate the risk. The number of drowning deaths is already higher than last year – but for many, cooling off in the water is more important than their own safety. ────────────────── SAT.1 NRW – Live at 5:30 p.m. The regional program for North Rhine-Westphalia with Bastian Wiedenhaupt and Marc Hillen.
