Today we are shopping at the last Sears department store in Orlando at The Florida Mall. Sears is an American chain of department stores founded by Richard Warren Sears and Alvah Curtis Roebuck in 1892. Through the 1980s, Sears was the largest retailer in the United States. Walmart and Kmart surpassed Sears in sales in 1990. After several years of declining sales, Sears parent company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2018. As of March, 2021, there were 57 Sears stores remaining. As of April, 2024, there were 11 Sears stores remaining, with 10 in the mainland US and one location in the US territory of Puerto Rico. As of December 20, 2025, just 5 Sears stores remain open and operating, with two of those in Florida, one in Miami, and the other here in Orlando.
