Saint Bertrand de Comminges

September 16, 1977 Construction of the imposing Cathedral of Saint Bertrand de Comminges began around 1120 when the Bishop of Comminges, Bertrand de l'Isle-Jourdain, the future Saint Bertrand, appreciating the admirable location of the acropolis devastated by the Burgundians, had the ruins cleared and a cathedral built. To serve it, he established a chapter of canons, and the faithful and pilgrims flocked to it. The small town received the name of the man who resurrected it. By the end of the 13th century, the church had become too small. Bertrand de GOT, the future Clement V, continued the work until its completion in 1352. Jean Luc DEJEAN retraces the episodes that marked the construction of this place that he makes us discover, from the pillar of the cloister built with Gallo-Roman materials, passing by all the Roman statues found during the excavations, the foundations, the tympanum with a very beautiful Adoration of the Magi, the hollowed-out capital serving as a holy water font, the statue of Bishop Bertrand and the tomb of Hugues de CHATILLON, to the wooden stalls, a cathedral within the cathedral, built in the 16th century, at the request of Jean de MAULEON.
