When The Characters Make The Jokes, Not The Writers
Who doesn't love a well timed joke? After all, laughter is the best medicine. What about jokes that... aren't well timed? Too often I see movies ruin their narrative and unnecessarily break tension by using comedy at the wrong times. There is a growing trend in dialogue where people are recognizing irony vs sincerity. People are sick of movies not taking themselves seriously! In this video, I break down what makes something funny. I then talk about when movies do it wrong, and explain a phenomena I call "the cost of comedy". Finally, I examine Good Will Hunting, a masterpiece of a drama that actually uses comedy perfectly.
