PHILIPP MELANCHTHON: Reformador, erudito y educador | BITE

Philipp Melanchthon was born in Germany in 1497 and studied in Heidelberg and Tübingen. The speech he gave upon entering Wittenberg attracted the attention of Martin Luther, who would have a profound influence on him. In 1518, he obtained the chair of Greek at the University of Wittenberg. Luther introduced Melanchthon to theology, and Melanchthon, in turn, taught Luther Greek. Melanchthon was the one who motivated Luther to translate the Bible into a German understandable to everyone. In 1521, he replaced Luther as leader of the Protestant cause in Wittenberg when his mentor was confined to Wartburg Castle. In 1526, he participated, with 27 other delegates, in the unification of the constitutions of the Reformed churches in Germany. Melanchthon was present during the first major conflict between Luther and the Church of Rome, in 1519. During this dispute with Johannes Eck, a seasoned Catholic theologian, Melanchthon passed Luther slips of paper containing biblical quotations refuting the papal supremacy. When the reformer could not appear in person, Melanchthon also acted as a leader of the Protestants. In 1529, he accompanied John of Saxony to the Diet of Speyer and was one of the signers of the Speyer Protest. As a representative of the Reformation before the Diet of Augsburg in 1530, he presented the Augsburg Confessions, 28 articles of faith drafted in collaboration with Luther. After Martin Luther's death, Melanchthon became the spokesperson for the Reformation. He remained the most prominent exponent of the Reformation in Germany until the end of his life. He died in Wittenberg on April 16, 1560.
