SANDY & LUNA DEMONSTRATE EATING ON A BRANCH! LUNA JUMPS TO NEW BRANCH GRASPING THE FISH FOBBV 7.9.26

Amazing & hard working Shadow never disappoints! Shadow managed to bring in four fish today, Sandy got the first two deliveries on the nest, then Shadow brought a fish over to Luna who was perched on Lookout Snag. Luna was able to grab the fish from Shadow, switch branches while grasping the fish firmly in his talons, transfer food from talons to beak and balance all while eating! Luna took his time savoring this fish too! Well done Luna - A+ Sandy flew over to Lookout Snag after Luna was finished eating - Luna flies off and Shadow goes fishing again! He returns with fish #4 for Sandy! She grabs the fish and balances on the branch with it and begins to self feed. It is difficult for fledglings to master eating on a branch right away - the fish is slippery, it is easy to let go of it while gripping the branch or turning around, it is a different ballgame all together from eating on a nest! Sandy did get to self feed for a few minutes but she did end up dropping her fish. Shadow saw that Sandy dropped it and he flew off the branch and went downward - maybe to retrieve it for himself. Eventually, both Sandy & Luna will learn an important technique - using the branch itself as a clamp. They will place the fish horizontally across the wood, wrap their talons completely around both the fish and the branch, and squeeze. This effectively locks the food to the tree, allowing them to use their sharp, curved beak to tear into the fish safely. Shadow is giving them ample practice to learn this technique. At the end of the day, they retire to the basement of the nest tree - showing their strong bond as siblings to stay together as long as they can before dispersing the area. It is a blessing to be able to witness these special moments in time!
