Aging with Dignity, Care, and Community What does it take to age well when healthcare, finances, and home care so rarely work together? In this discussion, Vanessa Valerio, RN Gerontologist, CMC, CHCA is joined by gerontology colleagues Bill Davis, PhD and Arzina Ali to explore the realities older adults and their families navigate every day. Together they unpack the fragmented systems families are left to manage on their own, the emotional weight of losing independence, and why culturally appropriate care is essential to preserving dignity. They also make the case for "life care managers" who help people navigate aging on their own terms, and for moving from a deficit model toward a truly person-centered approach. The conversation closes on a powerful idea: aging deserves an abundance mindset, not a triage mentality. Everyone is here to help one another. About the speakers: Bill Davis, PhD spent more than two decades in the California Community College system before transitioning into gerontology after walking alongside older friends and family through complex aging challenges. He is completing an MS in Gerontology at the USC Leonard Davis School and is building Pacific Aging Support Services (PASS), a "one-stop" consulting practice supporting older adults across the Bay Area and the Big Island. Arzina Ali brings nearly two decades of nonprofit leadership and education experience and is completing an MS in Gerontology at USC with a focus on minority aging populations. She is the founder of Muslim Aging and co-founder of the Sharieff Foundation, working to address the unique needs of aging American Muslims through programming, education, research, and advocacy.
