Built in the 1820s by developer John Roupell, the street offers a rare glimpse into everyday London life nearly 200 years ago. Unlike much of the surrounding area, it survived railway expansion, wartime bombing, and modern redevelopment, leaving much of its original character intact. Life on Roupell Street was vastly different from today. Historical records show that as many as 20 people could live inside a single four-room house, with multiple families often sharing the same property. The houses were originally built for skilled workers and tradespeople, many of whom helped build and maintain the rapidly growing city during the Industrial Revolution. Look closely at the buildings and you may spot historic fire insurance plaques attached to the walls. These metal markers date from a time before London's public fire brigade existed. Insurance companies operated their own fire brigades, and these plaques identified which company would respond if a building caught fire. They remain a fascinating reminder of how London functioned centuries ago. The area also has an unexpected connection to the birth of the modern circus. Before the street was built, this land formed part of an open area where Philip Astley staged horse-riding displays and performances in the late 18th century. Astley's shows evolved into what is now recognised as the modern circus, earning him the title of the father of the circus. Leaving this remarkable piece of old London behind, the walk continues east towards Fleet Street, one of the capital's most famous historic roads. For centuries, Fleet Street was the centre of Britain's newspaper industry and became synonymous with journalism and publishing. Today, the street remains lined with historic buildings, churches, legal institutions, traditional pubs, and stunning architecture that connects the West End with the ancient City of London.
