President Murmu’s Visit Highlights India–North Macedonia Cultural Ties

Ahead of President Droupadi Murmu's visit to North Macedonia as part of her three-nation tour of Eastern Europe, a unique cultural connection between India and North Macedonia has come into focus through the centuries-old tradition of silver filigree craftsmanship. Skopje's Old Bazaar, one of the oldest marketplaces in the Balkans, is renowned for its handmade silver filigree jewellery. The craft closely resembles Odisha's famous Rupa Tarakasi of Cuttack, known for its intricate designs and fine craftsmanship. Cuttack's silver filigree has also received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. Local artisans in Skopje continue the tradition through generations. A fourth-generation silver filigree artisan said, "In this shop, we make handmade filigree in silver. I make everything myself, including silver and ruby work. This butterfly design is beautiful for women because it is antique and unique. What we have here, nobody has in Macedonia." The artisan added that the craft has been passed down through generations, with the family continuing the tradition of handmade silver jewellery. Apart from the shared craft tradition, India and North Macedonia also share a historic connection through Mother Teresa, who was born in Skopje and later became an Indian citizen.
