The beloved anime series "Chibi Maruko-chan," which accompanied many through their childhood, officially celebrates its 40th anniversary this year! I visited the Songshan Creative Park in Taipei to attend the opening ceremony of the "Chibi Maruko-chan 40th Anniversary" special exhibition. Besides getting a sneak peek at the exhibits, I also witnessed the opening press conference and was surprised to see a fantastic performance by Japanese pop diva Shizuka Kudo and the Yomiuri Giants cheerleading team, VENUS. This exhibition is quite large, featuring 12 themed zones, showcasing everything from precious original manuscripts and the manga's creation process to the animation's development and the recreation of many familiar classic scenes. What impressed me most was the 77 brand-new 3D character figurines. Popular characters like Maruko, Tama, Hanawa, Miwa, Maruo, and Noguchi all made an appearance, along with photo areas featuring cherry blossom bridges, street scenes, flower fields, and Mount Fuji—truly making you feel like you've stepped into the world of Maruko-chan. Another highlight of the exhibition is the "Chibi Maruko-chan's Shining Stage," designed by Japanese pop diva Shizuka Kudo. Kudo's inspiration came from the idea of ​​"what if Maruko and her classmates formed an idol group," resulting in entirely new stage costumes for the characters. She incorporated rock style into the costumes while preserving each character's original traits, giving the familiar Maruko characters a fresh and different charm. The exhibition also features an immersive work, "Fantasy Theater," created by international light and shadow artist Miyako Fujimoto. Through light, music, and spatial design, it brings to life the boundless imagination of Momoko Sakura's pen. Additionally, there's "The Road of Time and Memory," created with approximately 30 retro televisions, playing the opening and ending themes from various anime series—a truly nostalgic experience for viewers who grew up watching Maruko-chan.
