The first known member of the family is Ahmet Rüştü. He served as director of the Mudanya telegraph office during the Ottoman Empire. Rüştü married Şaziye, the daughter of Sümbülzade, a prominent figure of the period. The couple had six children from this marriage. The eldest of the children would be martyred on the Caucasian front, and the youngest on the Romanian front. The family's fourth child was Mehmet Hayri. He graduated from the Military Academy and joined the Ottoman army as an officer. He also studied law and, because his French was exceptionally fluent, became a French teacher. However, after the War of Independence, the army told him he couldn't juggle both military service and teaching. Hayri Bey, who fought under İsmet İnönü's command in World War I, decided to retire after the war and pursued a career in business. The entire story that continues to remind us of Mehmet Hayri today begins with his entry into business. He was so successful in trade that every move he made would make him one of the most prominent figures in the country. Some sources claim that after the founding of the Republic, there was a project to create a new "Turkish rich." This project aimed to shift the control of trade, which had previously been dominated by Greeks, Armenians, and other minorities. Atatürk placed his trust in these powerful entrepreneurs, including Mehmet Hayri, and tasked them with building roads, factories, and bridges on behalf of the state.
