On December 23, 1998, in the second leg of the Peruvian First Division final, Universitario won their twenty-second title, defeating Sporting Cristal on penalties. In the first leg, played on Sunday, December 20, 1998, at the Estadio Nacional, Sporting Cristal won 2-1 with goals from Nilson Esidio and Andrés Mendoza. Universitario pulled one back with a goal from Luis "Cuto" Guadalupe and went into the second leg with the difficult task of overturning the deficit. The second leg, also at the Estadio Nacional, was played before a packed house of Universitario fans. Roberto "La Foca" Farfán was the star of the match, scoring twice to give Universitario the lead until the final minutes. Andrés Mendoza scored a dramatic consolation goal for Cristal, and the final went to penalties. From the penalty spot, Universitario won 4-2 with goals from Gustavo Grondona, Gustavo Falaschi, Luis Guadalupe, and Eduardo Esidio. César Casas missed the second penalty, but misses by Jorge Soto and Germán Carty were enough for "La U" to celebrate another title in their history.
