He longed to capture the sea of ​​clouds rising from three points around Maisan Mountain in a more majestic panorama. So, rain or shine, he climbs Maisan Mountain every morning and snaps his photos. Some people, upon accidentally discovering Maisan Mountain during their trip to Jinan, fell in love with the ancient spires of Maisan Mountain and gave up city life to come here. A couple who started farming in an apple orchard overlooking Maisan Mountain are still new to the business, but they have no regrets. The Jinan Plateau's climate, with its large daily temperature fluctuations, helps the apples ripen, and Maisan Mountain, visible every morning, seems to protect them. ■ The Secret of the Korean Peninsula's Birth Embraced by Tapsa Temple Tapsa Temple, nestled deep in a valley and surrounded by rocky cliffs like a fortress, is a major attraction on Maisan Mountain. Erected high above the ground, beyond human reach, and withstanding fierce winds and rain, the over 80 stone pagodas exude a sense of grandeur that goes beyond mystery. So, where do the countless stones that make up Tapsa Temple, considered a wonder of Korea, come from? Maisan Mountain is the only mountain in Korea composed entirely of conglomerate, a rock resembling slabs of concrete. Maisan's conglomerate layers reveal the history of tectonic movements on the Korean Peninsula, a result of continental collisions. Ninety million years ago, two large faults collapsed, creating a lake and depositing conglomerate. Then, 35 million years ago, the faults shifted, lifting the previously sunken terrain and creating Maisan Mountain. As the conglomerate, which had risen, repeatedly thawed and froze over time, it fell away, creating the tafoni phenomenon, which continues to this day. ■ The Birthplace of the Joseon Dynasty's Founding Legend Climb 300 meters from Tapsa Temple toward the peak of Maisan Mountain, and you'll find a small hermitage. This is Eunsu Temple, which holds the legend of the Joseon Dynasty's founding. Legend has it that during the late Goryeo Dynasty, General Yi Seong-gye stopped by Maisan Mountain in Jinan on his way back from defeating the Japanese pirates in the Battle of Hwangsan. There, he dreamed of receiving a golden ruler from a god, and that he would later found a new nation, Joseon. As if to corroborate this, the pear tree in Eunsu Temple's courtyard is said to have sprouted from a seed personally planted by Yi Seong-gye after a 100-day prayer to solidify the founding of the nation. ■ Honoring the Spirit of Patriotism Mid-slope of Maisan Mountain stands a dragon rock with the names of over 1,800 people engraved on it. In 1907, during the Japanese colonial period, the disbandment of the Korean army sparked a nationwide uprising of righteous armies. Like-minded comrades from Jeolla Province also gathered. They gathered at Yongbawi Rock, rallied Yi Seok-yong as their leader, and engraved their names on the rock. They formed a suppression force for the Honam Righteous Army and fought against the Japanese. This patriotic spirit of Maisan dates back to the Imjin War. Ungchi Pass, which passes through Jinan and reaches Jeonju, was the site of a land battle during the Imjin War. The government forces and righteous armies joined forces to defeat the Japanese forces that had invaded Jeolla Province, driven by Admiral Yi Sun-sin, and secured victory, securing the fertile plains of Honam.
