The 1935 Labor Day hurricane destroyed the tracks, but the bridges stood firm. The state converted it into a highway, and it's been in use this way since 1938. The Seven Mile Bridge consists of 440 precast concrete segments, rising to 20 meters (65 ft) in the middle. The segments were cast in Tampa and transported to the site by barge — using an assembly-line construction method, much like a car factory. Key West's conch houses were built by Bahamian shipwrights in the 19th century, featuring wraparound porches, high ceilings, louvers, and raised on pilings. Each house is essentially an air conditioner without electricity: this is passive cooling, a concept we are rediscovering today. Shotgun houses were built by Cuban cigar factory workers. All the rooms are arranged in a single row, meaning if you opened the front and back doors, a bullet could fly straight through without hitting anything.
