This is the chapter where abstract classes and interfaces stop being abstract concepts in the "textbook" sense and start becoming practical tools you'll reach for constantly in real Java development. We open with abstract classes, exploring why you'd want a class that can never be instantiated directly. We build an abstract superclass, mark certain methods as abstract with no method body, and show how subclasses are then forced by the compiler to provide their own implementation of those methods. This reinforces a core idea from earlier chapters: polymorphism lets you write code that works with the supertype reference, while the actual behavior that runs depends on the real, concrete object underneath at runtime. From there we move into interfaces, and spend real time contrasting them with abstract classes, since this is one of the most common points of confusion for learners at this stage. We look at how an interface defines a contract, a set of method signatures with no implementation, that any implementing class must fulfill. We build a simple example where unrelated classes, classes that don't share a common superclass, can still be treated polymorphically because they all implement the same interface. This is a powerful idea: it shows that polymorphism in Java isn't only about inheritance hierarchies, it's about shared behavior contracts. We also dig into why a class can implement multiple interfaces but only extend one superclass, and talk through the design reasoning behind that restriction in Java. This naturally leads into a discussion of how interfaces let you design more flexible, decoupled systems, since your code can depend on an interface type rather than a specific concrete class, making it easier to swap implementations later without breaking everything that depends on it. A key theme running through this chapter is the idea of programming to a supertype, whether that supertype is an abstract class or an interface, rather than programming to a specific concrete implementation. We walk through concrete examples showing the practical benefits of this approach: more maintainable code, easier testing, and the ability to extend a system with new subclasses or new interface implementations without having to rewrite existing code that already depends on the shared type. We also revisit the instanceof operator and casting, since these come up naturally once you're working with polymorphic references, showing how to safely check an object's actual runtime type before casting it down to a more specific type when needed. Throughout the video, I code everything live in NetBeans on Windows, building out an example hierarchy with an abstract superclass alongside a separate interface, then creating multiple concrete classes that mix and match both, so you can see firsthand how the two mechanisms complement each other rather than compete with each other. We test everything by writing code that references only the abstract type or interface type, then watch as the correct overridden method runs based on the real object underneath, exactly what polymorphism is all about. This chapter is a real leveling-up moment in the book, because abstract classes and interfaces are everywhere in professional Java code, in frameworks, libraries, and any well-designed application. Getting comfortable with the distinction between "is-a" relationships through abstract classes and "can-do" contracts through interfaces gives you a much stronger foundation for designing your own classes going forward, rather than just inheriting for the sake of code reuse. By the end of this chapter, you'll understand when to reach for an abstract class versus an interface, be comfortable designing polymorphic systems around either, and have a much clearer sense of how professional Java code is structured to stay flexible and maintainable as it grows.
