Mission to Shiraz, 1955

The story of ORT in one area -- Iran -- described by an Iranian student who has been trained at the Central ORT Teachers' Institute in Anières, Switzerland to become a teacher in his native Iran.' Yusuf tells his story of growing up in the Shiraz ghetto, attending the ORT Teheran school and being sent for teacher training in Anières. He discusses the challenges faced by an ORT teacher in Iran at the time. The film begins with footage of a graduation ceremony in Anières, showing World ORT Director General Dr Syngalowski addressing the assembly, followed by workshop scenes at the school. It then moves to Shiraz, showing views of the city, the Jewish ghetto and children on the streets of the ghetto. City scenes of Teheran follow with scenes at the ORT school there, its classrooms, workshops and the ORT Teheran Committee. A brief scene of young women in a sports lesson follows before cutting back to the Shiraz ORT school. There the film shows the grounds with students; shoe-making workshops; medical treatment for students suffering from trachoma; students washing and having a meal; sewing lessons for girls; and Hebrew classes. The film concludes with graduation day at Anières, where Max Braude, Dr Syngalowski and the Director of ORT Anières meet the Iranian graduates and Dr Syngalowski shakes their hands and chats to them.
