Dingwall Number 1 (Craig Road) Level Crossing, Highland

Date filmed: Tuesday the 9th of July 2024 Video filmed at 09:30 Route: Kyle of Localsh Line Dingwall (DIN) is the closest station Crossing type: Automatic Full Barrier Crossing Locally-monitored by traincrew (AFBCL) Filming location: Craig Road, Dingwall (IV15 9LE) A level crossing located on a quiet residential street in the town of Dingwall in the Ross and Cromarty area of the Scottish Highlands. It's the first level crossing out of Dingwall Station on the Kyle of Localsh Line, a long, mostly single-track line which runs west through dramatic Highland scenery to the small village of Kyle of Localsh just over the water from the Isle of Skye. Is it an ABCL? Is it an MCB-OD? It's sort-of both. This is an 'Automatic Full Barrier Crossing Locally-monitored by traincrew' Crossing, and only three exist in the UK - all in Scotland. The crossing here used to be un-gated but was converted to this state in late 2018. It's protected by drivers' crossing indicators, and a simplified obstacle detection system scans the crossing as the four barriers lower automatically when a train approaches. When the system confirms the crossing is clear and working correctly, the white lights will flash to the drivers, but if there's a fault or the crossing is obstructed, a red light will flash and it's up to the driver what to do next. The crossing has white floodlights to illuminate it throughout the sequence, and very strangely for a full-barrier crossing, the racket from the alarms continues all the way to when the lights extinguish - probably due to its automatic nature. The odd choice has been made to have four alarms here, and LED pedestrian signals are also provided.
