L.A. Garbage Truck Driver POV: “Baby Truck” on Super HEAVY South L.A. Trash!

Pulling route SA-1 which is 1 of 2 routes that covers South Central Los Angeles. The other route being SA-3. This route (on this day) was definitely a challenge. All the bins were full and some of them were super heavy. So heavy that sometimes the truck couldn’t even dump them. Luckily, I know a small trick that will make the truck dump the bins. It involves shaking the arm by bringing the arm in and out to give the “cart” enough momentum to make the heavy bin dump into the truck. The trick only works if the bin goes half way up the curve on the arm. Otherwise, the trick won’t work and the bin won’t dump. Unfortunately, a heavy can I dumped towards the end of the route ended up breaking the cart sensor. The cart sensor lets me know if the clamps (grips) are open or closed. This caused the sensor to stop reading that the clamps were open leading to the display in the cab to show “clamps closed.” The truck won’t drive past 15 miles per hour if the display is reading “clamps closed” or “arm out.” That is the beeping sound you hear in the cab when I start closing the clamps as the truck is slowing down to a stop. It is a safety device to keep us from driving off with either the clamps closed or the arm sticking out. This truck was a shop dump or “PM” on this day so I had to bring it into the yard empty so the shop could perform routine maintenance on it. I wrote it up for the cart sensor so it should be repaired or replaced along with the maintenance work from the PM. Anyways, please enjoy the video and lemme know what you think! Thanks for watching!
