Senator Fernando Rospigliosi responded to criticism following the election of the Senate's Board of Directors and denied any attempt to conceal the process. He explained that the secret ballot is a long-standing practice in Parliament to protect each legislator's freedom of choice. During the interview, Rospigliosi maintained that the election of the Board of Directors is one of the few closed ballots in Congress. "It has to be secret to prevent blackmail, extortion, and pressure on members of Congress," he stated. The senator emphasized that senators are not bound by any binding mandate and must vote according to their conscience. Rospigliosi also explained that the voting procedure is lengthy: first, the ballots are signed; then each senator deposits their vote in the ballot box; subsequently, the ballots are counted; and finally, they are read one by one. He indicated that this mechanism aims to prevent direct pressure on legislators, unlike an electronic vote. Regarding the absence of the press in the room where the vote took place, Rospigliosi denied that it was his order. He asserted that it was an administrative matter and denied having prevented journalists from entering. “No, (there was no order), not from me,” he responded when asked if he had given any instructions to restrict coverage. The senator affirmed that there was indeed pressure on left-wing parliamentarians during the election and noted that some were photographed as they stood up to vote. According to Rospigliosi, these kinds of actions sought to influence the senators' votes and subject them to a political line defined by their leaders. ROSPIGLIOSI QUESTIONS NIETO AND DEFENDS MIGUEL TORRES' VICTORY Rospigliosi also criticized Jorge Nieto's role in forming the opposition alliance and maintained that several parliamentarians from those blocs do not necessarily agree with the position taken by their leaders. According to him, there are reasonable members of Congress with whom it will be possible to talk once the new Parliament begins its work. Finally, the senator defended Miguel Torres's victory as president of the Senate and rejected claims that the election was based on betrayal, as some on the left have alleged.
