A Subscriber Told Me to Check This Lowe’s Clearance Rack

A subscriber told me the clearance rack at the North Side Lowe’s in Springfield, Missouri, was packed—so after not visiting this location for nearly five years, I went to see whether she was right. We start on the clearance rack looking at Sunbeckia, lantana, giant Seaside Serenade hydrangeas, Nitty Gritty roses, PowWow Wild Berry echinacea, Queen of Hearts butterfly bush, daylilies, and one beautiful half-price tricolor beech that tested my financial discipline. After that, we take a full walk through one of the cleanest and best-organized Lowe’s garden centers I’ve visited. We find Luna hardy hibiscus, Black Diamond and dwarf crape myrtles, Serendipity allium, colorful echinacea, First Knight fountain grass, false cypress, Rose of Sharon—and several plants being sold in decorative pots that nobody asked for. Along the way, we talk about clearance plants worth rescuing, plants I would leave behind, bloom-time combinations, mature plant sizes, heat damage, winter survival, and why Lowe’s needs to stop making us pay $42 for a shrub just because somebody put it in a fancy pot.
