Dead Malls Season 7 Episode 11 - Gateway Mall (FL)

Our March 2025 Florida road trip with the boys started in a way I’ll never forget. Just after sunrise, we rolled into Jacksonville, the air still foggy and damp. At around 7AM, the second mall we laid eyes on (the first was a bust) was none other than Gateway Town Center—better known as Gateway Mall, our first of many successes. That early, the place felt surreal: an empty lot, palms swaying, soft blue neon still glowing from the nearby strip center, and yet demolition crews were already at work, tearing into the old JCPenney. As we slipped through a back corridor and a rusty open door, we went from sneaking past demo workers to diving headfirst into the small abandoned mall. Walking those halls where generations once shopped—while hearing alarms and demolition echoing around us—was unforgettable. This video captures that experience: the strange quiet of an early morning visit, sun pouring through pink skylights, and the story of how Gateway Mall rose and fell over 70 years.
