The country, which has been experiencing political and economic instability for over a decade, was the target of a US military operation in January of this year, when then-President Nicolás Maduro was captured and taken to a prison in New York, where he faces charges of drug trafficking and terrorism. Now governed by Maduro's vice-president, Delcy Rodríguez, Venezuela will have to confront the humanitarian and economic consequences of the tragedy amidst a political clash between the government and the opposition over the promise of free elections in the near future.
