The Impact of Venezuela's Twin Earthquakes

VENEZUELA EARTHQUAKE RECOVERY Collapsed buildings and streets scattered with rubble, this is the aftermath of a 7.2 magnitude earthquake, followed only 39 seconds later by another 7.5 magnitude earthquake, which rocked Venezuela's north coast on Wednesday. The quakes caused more than 770 buildings to collapse, leaving thousands homeless and trapping many beneath the rubble. Authorities say around 70,000 people have been reported missing, and more than 1,400 people have died. Many are frustrated, saying that the government didn't respond fast enough, and reckon there could have been a better earthquake warning system in place. Over the past few days, rescue teams and volunteers have been working hard to search for survivors, with the United Nations coordinating a big recovery effort, sending more than 2,000 rescue workers from 27 countries to help with the clean-up. While there's still a long road to recovery ahead, with everyone pitching into the relief effort, communities are slowly getting back on their feet. SOCIAL MEDIA BAN CHANGES The government has announced some changes to the social media ban. While more than 5 million accounts have been deactivated or removed since December last year, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says there are still too many children on social media, and that big tech companies aren't doing enough to comply with the ban. So, the government is looking to legislate new rules, giving the eSafety Commissioner more power to force companies to show evidence of the changes they've made, and doubling the maximum penalty for tech giants who breach the ban, to 99 million dollars! WORLD CUP It's been a rollercoaster for the Socceroos, with ups and downs, and I guess a kinda flat bit last Friday. Anyway, it was enough to make it to the crucial knock-out round of the tournament, and over the weekend, we found out which team the Socceroos will face next, thanks to the match between Egypt and Iran. The match ended in a draw, which means Egypt has earned a date with Australia, which will happen very early on Saturday morning. SUPER NETBALL In the Super Netball, there were big smiles for the Melbourne Vixens, after beating the West Coast Fever in the semi-finals, 62 to 51. This is the third time in a row the Vixens have made it to the Grand final, and sets up a mighty clash against the top-of-the-ladder Adelaide Thunderbirds on Friday. WOMEN'S T20 WORLD CUP Over to the women's T-20 World Cup, where Australia has made it to the semi-finals, after smashing India by six wickets. At times, they made it look easy, with some handywork by the stumps, and while India took some big swings, Ellyse Perry and Ash Gardner's century partnership kept Australia's winning streak alive! CLIFF DIVING Finally to DENMARK, where these brave divers jumped from a height of more than twenty metres, and, get this, instead of screaming, they try to do cool stuff on they way down. Aussie Rhiannan Iffland had yet another spectacular showing, claiming her 47th series win, which ties the all time record! CAN REGATTA First to Darwin's Mindil beach, for the annual Can Regatta! It's been a territory tradition for more than 50 years, and sees homemade boats crafted out of empty cans put to the test. And, if the can boats don't, well, float ya boat, there was also a thong throwing comp. DUNG BEETLES And finally to a special delivery of dung beetles. They're being posted to farmers to help them out during Winter. See, when animals do their business, these beetles move it to their underground burrows, and, well - eat it. Over Winter they will consume about 250 times their body weight in cow doo every day, which helps get rid of the dung, and improve the soil - win win! __________________________________________ Subscribe https://www.youtube.com/behindthenews...
