It is the second-largest city in the state and the seventh-largest city in Germany, with a population of 644,280. Düsseldorf’s moated and tree-lined shopping street called the Königsallee is well known. Notable landmarks in the city include the 13th–14th-century Lambertuskirche (Lambertus Church), whose crooked tower has become the town symbol, and the old town hall (1567–88). Of the castle of the electors palatine, burned in 1872, only the tower survives. Other reminders of Düsseldorf’s illustrious past include Jägerhof Castle (1752–63), which houses the town historical collection; Benrath Castle (1755–73), built by Nicolas de Pigage; and the remains of the palace of Frederick I (Frederick Barbarossa).
