Our First NASCAR Race: Why TV Doesn't Do It Justice

First NASCAR race ever, and MIS did not disappoint. I went to the FireKeepers 400 with my son Sam, his best friend Keagan, my friend James from Outreach, and none of us had ever been to a race before. We walked the grounds, checked out race village, watched people grilling and hanging out, took it all in, and then those cars came screaming past us at over 200 mph. Let me tell you something. TV does not do it justice. The sound, the speed, the energy, the people, the whole atmosphere. It was unreal. Denny Hamlin in the number 11 car ended up winning the race, and then he took his victory lap flying Kyle Busch’s flag, which was such a cool moment to see in person. Perfect weather. Great people. First race. Core memory made. This is the kind of stuff I love about recovery too. New experiences. Real connection. Being present. Doing life again. Sobriety is not about sitting around missing out. Sometimes it looks like standing at Michigan International Speedway with your son, your people, and a giant smile on your face while stock cars shake the ground. Sober is not boring. Not even close.
