SEMITIC: TUNISIAN ARABIC & MALTESE

Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together. Tunisian Arabic, known locally as Tūnsi or Derja, is spoken by 12 million people in Tunisia. It is closely related to eastern Algerian and western Libyan Arabic, forming part of the Maghrebi Arabic dialect continuum. Tunisian Arabic has a predominantly Semitic and Arabic vocabulary, with a Berber, Latin, and possibly Neo-Punic influence. About 8-9% of its vocabulary consists of Berber loanwords. It also incorporates French, Turkish, Italian, Spanish, and Persian words. Maltese is a Semitic language derived from medieval Sicilian Arabic with significant Romance influences. The Maltese people speak it and is the national language of Malta, as well as the only official Semitic and Afroasiatic language in the European Union. Originating from Siculo-Arabic, a Maghrebi Arabic dialect, it evolved independently following the Norman invasion of Malta, undergoing a process of Latinisation. Unlike other Arabic varieties, Maltese has no diglossic relationship with Classical or Modern Standard Arabic. Its morphology has been deeply influenced by Romance languages, particularly Italian and Sicilian. This video is created for educational, language awareness, and language preservation purposes. It aims to provide valuable insights and knowledge to viewers, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of different languages and their unique characteristics. By raising awareness about linguistic diversity, the video seeks to foster a greater respect and recognition for various languages, particularly those that are endangered or underrepresented. Additionally, it contributes to the preservation of languages by documenting and sharing linguistic knowledge, thus ensuring that these languages and their cultural heritage are not lost to future generations.
