Brexit has reignited old tensions in Great Britain. It has revived the Northern Ireland conflict. Extremist groups are disrupting negotiations between London and Brussels, thus challenging Europe's peace policies. If Brexit has already poisoned the atmosphere to this extent, what might the reunification of the island of Ireland do? Even after 26 years of peace, the embers of the Northern Ireland conflict have not been completely extinguished. Brexit has reignited old tensions, and the reintroduction of tariffs on imports from the EU has stirred up a hornet's nest. The border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, which has existed since the partition of the island in 1921, is the result of numerous clashes that subsided after the Good Friday Agreement of 1998. The border was dissolved, the watchtowers disappeared. Customs checks became unnecessary, as both the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom were EU member states. But Brexit has shattered this fragile balance. The government in London forced Northern Ireland to leave the EU, thereby turning the region against it. After lengthy negotiations, the post-Brexit rules now stipulate that goods arriving in Northern Ireland from the UK will be checked upon arrival. This means that Northern Ireland remains de facto in the EU's single market and customs union, much to the displeasure of unionists, who see Northern Ireland's place within the United Kingdom as threatened. Against the backdrop of the economic crisis, all signs point to a worsening of the situation. This documentary examines the impact of Brexit on Northern Ireland, where the ghosts of a past that claimed over 3,500 lives between 1968 and 1998 still haunt the region. These ghosts shape the daily lives of the population and thwart Northern Ireland's economic and political plans. For Europe, the situation, which threatens to escalate due to the violence of extremist groups, poses a major challenge to peace. If Brexit has already poisoned the atmosphere to such an extent, what will happen if the island of Ireland votes on its reunification? The Good Friday Agreement of 1998 opens the door to such a referendum. Will the agreements reached between Brussels and London trigger new unrest? Or will the circumstances accelerate the process of reunifying Ireland, which has been divided for 103 years? The documentary draws on new archival footage and interviews with people who experience the developments firsthand, day after day, and thus explains the connections within the Northern Ireland conflict. ...
