Most People Use Tan Sau WRONG Wing Chun Explained

Tan Sau is one of the most misunderstood movements in Wing Chun. Many people think Tan Sau is a hard block. But in real Wing Chun, Tan Sau is not about blocking — it is about structure and redirection. The key principle of Tan Sau is elbow control. When the elbow stays relaxed and points toward the centerline, the arm becomes part of your body structure. Instead of using arm strength, the power comes from the whole body connection. Tan Sau does three important things: • Protects the centerline • Redirects incoming force • Maintains forward structure The movement must be small, relaxed, and direct. If the elbow lifts too high, the structure collapses. If the arm stretches too far, you lose control. In real application, Tan Sau is rarely used alone. It works together with other Wing Chun actions such as Pak Sau and straight punching, allowing you to defend and attack at the same time. After more than 50 years of practicing and teaching Wing Chun, I have found that the biggest mistake people make is treating Tan Sau like a big blocking motion. Real Tan Sau is simple. It is calm. It is efficient. And when done correctly, it controls the centerline without using force. #WingChun #WingChunWisdom #TanSau #WingChunTechnique #martialartstraining #IpManWingChun #KungFu #SelfDefense #MartialArts #WingChunMaster
