The Trans-Amazonian Highway (BR-230) is one of the longest roads in Brazil, stretching 4,260 km. It connects the city of Cabedelo, in Paraíba, to Lábrea, in Amazonas. Even though construction began in the 1970s, governments did not fully complete it, leaving approximately 1,700 km of dirt and mud sections. For this reason, a road in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul was named the Trans-Amazonian Highway. It is less than 0.01% of the original length, with only 4.8 km of extension, and is located in Santa Clara do Sul, in the Taquari Valley. The road was opened when Santa Clara do Sul was still just a district of Lajeado. Since it has been independent for 34 years, it is estimated that the route was implemented almost 40 years ago to create a link for transporting production between the higher and lower parts of that area, between Alto Arroio Alegre and Linha Sampaio. Because the territory of Lajeado was very extensive at the time, maintaining the road was difficult. Therefore, it began to be called the Trans-Amazonian Highway, a reference to the famous highway in the North and Northeast of the country that faced many problems due to its dirt and mud terrain.
