what Substrate is Best for King Snakes?

I give an unbiased review of different kingsnake substrate styles by experiencing each substrate style over a long period of time with my snake keeping. I give you an honest reflection of the pros and cons of everyday snake keeping with each substrate. So I’ve been running a substrate experiment. I’ve been keeping 3 snake set ups in 3 different substrate styles for a extended period of time. These 3 substrate styles are: Bioactive substrate Topsoil: playsand mix substrate Lignocil shavings substrate Going into this I was looking for one thing from each of the substrates. The substrate had to allow the snake to express natural behaviours. It does not matter how naturalistic the substrate itself is. What matters most is function. The best reptile substrate is the substrate that fits your lifestyle and needs, looks good to you as a keeper while still allows the animal to perform those natural behaviours. And this might be different for every keeper. Bioactive is no better for the animals welfare than a typical shavings bedding if it doesn’t allow the animal to behave naturally. My take home message at the end of all this is this, you aren’t a poor keeper for using shavings nor are you automatically a great keeper for behind bioactive. What makes a great keeper is the ability to assess their animal’s welfare and make judgements based upon welfare.
