It is classified as a subcompact car, although it is significantly larger than its stylistic model, the Fiat Nuova 500, produced from 1957 to 1977. A retro design concept known as the Fiat Trepiùno was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 2004. On July 4, 2007 – 50 years after the introduction of the Nuova 500 – Fiat officially presented the car. Sales in Germany began on October 27, 2007. In Fiat's model history, the new 500 is the direct successor to the Seicento. In contrast to its predecessors, which were considered affordable entry-level models, the 500 is intended to be a lifestyle product modeled after the Mini. Technically, the 500 shares many components, such as the engines and the underbody, with the Panda. Prices for the Fiat 500, ranging from €10,500 to €14,500, are about €1,500 more than those of the Panda. On November 19, 2007, the new Fiat 500 was named Car of the Year for 2008. At the end of 2013, Fiat launched the sporty-looking 500S version. 2019 was its most successful sales year, with 375,000 vehicles sold. The next generation, based on a new platform, was also unveiled at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show as the electric 500E.
