Discussion Seminar: AI-assisted discoveries in soil carbon cycle
AI-assisted discoveries in soil carbon cycle: Mechanisms and predictions toward global sustainability This is the March 2025 event in CCAI's Discussion Seminar Series. Speaker: Dr. Feng Tao, a Schmidt AI for Science Postdoctoral Fellow at Cornell University The global soil system promises a nature-based solution for climate change with its potential to sequester billions of tons of carbon as organic or inorganic forms over durable timescales. However, key scientific questions regarding the soil carbon cycle—such as the mechanisms of formation, persistence, and the response of soil organic and inorganic carbon to environmental changes and land management—remain unresolved. This presentation will introduce his research program in advancing soil carbon science and management, leveraging mechanistic modelling, big data analytics, and new AI-based tools. He will discuss the determinant role of microbial activities in global soil organic carbon storage and three key limitations in promoting soil inorganic carbon formation under enhanced rock weathering. These findings will be the scientific underpinnings to innovate transformative climate mitigation solutions via the soil system. More details here: https://community.climatechange.ai/c/...
