Mazda has revealed new details about its first in-house-developed hybrid system, which will debut in the next-generation CX-5. While the system is expected to launch in North America in 2027, Australian availability isn't expected until approximately early 2028. Mazda's Main Goal: Better Driving Feel According to CX-5 Program Manager Koichiro Yamaguchi, Mazda's biggest criticism of current hybrid vehicles is their throttle response. He believes many hybrids feel disconnected because there is often a delay between pressing the accelerator and the vehicle responding. Mazda wants to eliminate that sensation. Yamaguchi stated that he has driven many competing hybrid systems and found none fully satisfying from a driver's perspective. As a result, Mazda developed its own hybrid powertrain specifically to deliver a more natural and responsive feel. How Mazda Plans to Do It The new hybrid system will be paired with Mazda's upcoming SkyActiv-Z engine. Mazda says this engine combines characteristics of both: Gasoline engines Diesel engines The goal is to achieve: Extremely high thermal efficiency Strong fuel economy Better low-rpm responsiveness Mazda acknowledges that highly efficient combustion engines often have weaknesses at lower engine speeds. To address this, the electric motor will provide assistance in those areas, improving responsiveness and drivability.
