Modifying a hydraulic jack to work with a manual power pack

I wanted to build this project for quite some time now. This is how I am modifying a hydraulic jack to work with a manual power pack. I will use this to make my own fire-burning logs to burn in a fireplace. Stay tuned for the rest of the project. Key Modification Steps Isolate the Reservoir: You must block the internal inlet from the jack’s oil reservoir to prevent pressure from escaping back into the tank. This is typically done by tapping threads into the cylinder bore or drilling and plugging the inlet port with a socket head bolt. Create the Hydraulic Port: Tap the area where the manual pump handle connects (the pump extension) to accept a high-pressure fitting, such as a 1/4" NPTF fitting. This allows the external power pack to pump fluid directly into the cylinder. Remove Internal Valving: Remove the ball valve or check valve associated with the manual pump lever. You must ensure the release valve remains intact to serve as a safety relief valve, preventing over-pressurization that could damage the jack or frame. Seal the Connection: ensure a leak-free connection with the new external fitting. Important Considerations Pressure Ratings: Bottle jacks are often designed for high pressure (2,000–4,000+ PSI). Ensure your manual power pack can deliver this pressure; standard low-pressure gear pumps may not be sufficient. Single-Acting Limitation: Most bottle jacks are single-acting, meaning they extend via hydraulic pressure but retract via gravity or a spring. You cannot hydraulically retract them unless you modify the seal area, which is complex and prone to leakage. Safety: Always consult the equipment manual and follow safety instructions. If you lack experience with high-pressure hydraulics, consider purchasing a dedicated hydraulic cylinder instead, as improper modification can lead to catastrophic failure.
