This presentation highlights the critical role of intentional book selection in parenting and education, emphasizing awareness of the cultural environment or water children inhabit. By understanding the modern vs. traditional self and scrutinizing the messages children absorb through stories, parents can actively cultivate virtue, discipline, and rooted identity. The Mindful Muslim Reader project exemplifies how community-curated resources empower parents to navigate an often contradictory literary marketplace aligned with Islamic values. As a practical next step, parents should critically evaluate media content using the three fundamental questions—how a book shapes their child’s actions, thoughts, and speech—while balancing screen time and encouraging engagement with meaningful stories. This approach ensures children grow not only as entertained readers but as noble, resilient individuals grounded in faith and tradition. Mariam Jukaku is a writer, editor, and educator. She is one of the founders of the Mindful Muslim Reader project, an initiative to get books worth reading in the hands of our children. She has homeschooled her two children in the Bay Area for more than a decade. She also teaches and helps run the ILM Tree Homeschool Co-operative in Lafayette, CA. She knows books can change our minds, move our hearts, and expand our worlds, so she’s committed to getting the best books into young hands early and often. This video presentation focuses on parenting through books within the homeschooling context, exploring how reading choices shape children’s character and worldview. It introduces the Mindful Muslim Reader project, a community-driven resource designed to help parents select meaningful books that nurture traditional values and counterbalance modern cultural influences. The core theme centers on distinguishing between the modern self and the traditional self as reflected in children’s literature, urging parents to be intentional about the morals, messages, and overall worldview that books impart to their children. Suitable for homeschooling parents, educators, and caregivers seeking mindful media consumption for kids, viewers will learn practical criteria for choosing books and understanding the cultural water children swim in, empowering them to foster virtue, discipline, and rooted identity through storytelling. Timeline Summary 00:00-02:45: Introduction and Purpose of Mindful Muslim Reader Maryam introduces the Mindful Muslim Reader project, created by homeschooling mothers to find books worth reading for both voracious and reluctant readers. She explains the importance of stories and messages in books, setting up the session’s focus on parenting through books. 02:45-08:15: The Water Metaphor and Modern vs Traditional Dichotomy Using the metaphor of fish unaware of water, Maryam leads an interactive exercise comparing modern disposable furniture to traditional enduring furniture. She extends this comparison to ideas circulating in culture—modern vs. traditional values—to prime viewers for applying these concepts to their worldview and parenting. 08:15-11:30: Defining the Modern Self vs Traditional Self Maryam contrasts definitions of self: the modern self seeks freedom from limits and defines truth by feelings, while the traditional self seeks freedom through discipline and finds truth by submitting to Allah. These lenses will be used to analyze children’s literature. Key Points 📚 Parenting through books shapes children’s worldview and identity, making thoughtful book selection critical for character development. 🌊 The metaphor of water illustrates how cultural ideas subtly influence children—parents must consciously choose values to immerse their kids in. 🤔 Modern self vs. traditional self: modern promotes self-expression, feeling-based truth, and boundary removal; traditional promotes discipline, submission to Allah, and virtue cultivation. 🔍 Popular children’s books can entertain but often reinforce entitlement and disrespect, promoting a modern self rather than traditional values. ✔️ The Mindful Muslim Reader website offers pre-reviewed, flagged books aligned with traditional values, including teaching tools for parents and educators. ⚠️ Parents should avoid glorification of atheism, moral relativism, scientism, individualism, and LGBTQ themes per project guidelines. 📅 Checking book publication dates and utilizing external review resources can help identify potential ideological concerns in children’s literature.
