As with most of Conrad’s books, the theme is running away from the past, concretely in this novel, from the shame and feelings of guilt for one’s acts, and an effort at self rehabilitation. Further, the book is about youth and its sins, with youthful, often unrealistic and destructive idealism, ambitions and grand expectations. Which leads to giving too much importance to failure, and causes an exaggerated feeling of disappointment with oneself.
