Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) was an Anglo-Irish explorer famous for his expeditions to Antarctica during the so-called "Heroic Age of Polar Exploration." He was born in Kilkea, Ireland, and joined the merchant navy at the age of 16. He participated in the Discovery expedition (1901-1904) led by Robert Falcon Scott and later commanded the Nimrod expedition (1907-1909), reaching the closest latitude to the South Pole at that time. His greatest feat was the Endurance expedition (1914-1917), whose ship became trapped in the ice, forcing Shackleton to lead an epic survival journey that culminated in the rescue of his entire crew without loss of life. He subsequently attempted further expeditions, but died of a heart attack in 1922 during the Quest expedition in South Georgia.
