A reading from the Acts of the Apostles 4:33; 5:12, 27b-33; 12:2 In those days, the apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus with great boldness, and everyone was well pleased with them. Many signs and wonders were performed among the people through the apostles. They all met together in Solomon’s Colonnade. They were brought before the Sanhedrin, and the high priest questioned them, saying, “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and intend to make us responsible for this man’s blood.” Peter and the other apostles replied, “We must obey God rather than men. The God of our ancestors raised Jesus from the dead—the very one you killed by hanging him on a tree.” God exalted him to his right hand as Prince and Savior, to grant repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.” When they heard this, they were furious and wanted to kill them. King Herod had James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword. Today's Psalm Psalm 66:2-3, 5, 7-8 R/. Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you. May God be gracious to us and bless us; may he make his face shine upon us, so that your ways may be known on earth, your salvation among all nations. R/. Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you rule the world with justice, and govern the nations of the earth. R/. The earth has yielded its harvest; the Lord our God has blessed us. May God bless us; May all the ends of the earth fear him. R/. Second Reading A reading from the second letter of the apostle Saint Paul to the Corinthians 4:7-15 Brothers and sisters: We have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the extraordinary power may be of God and not from us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. For, while we live, we are always being handed over to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our mortal flesh. So then, death is at work in us, but life in you. Having the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, “I believed, therefore I have spoken,” we also believe and therefore speak, Knowing that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you in his presence. All this is for your benefit, so that as grace reaches more and more people, thanksgiving may increase to the glory of God. Gospel of the day A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew 20:20-28 At that time, the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor of him. He asked her, “What do you want?” She replied, “Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.” But Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup I am about to drink?” They answered, “We are able.” He said to them, “You will indeed drink my cup; But to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant; it belongs to those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.” When the ten heard this, they were indignant with the two brothers. Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave. Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
