Design Before You Draw or Paint: Hands-On Composition from Start to Finish | 3-Part Series, artful
TIMOTHY C. TYLER — REALIST OIL PAINTER, TEACHER, JUROR, AND EASEL BUILDER I explain how color, value, placement, and visual movement work together to create a strong composition. You will see some of the practical thinking and problem-solving behind representational painting—not just the finished result. Welcome to the YouTube channel of Timothy C. Tyler, a professional realist oil painter, portrait artist, teacher, competition judge, former adjunct professor, and student of art history. This channel explores composition, drawing, values, color, light, brushwork, and pictorial structure. I began painting as a boy, accepted my first commission at fourteen, and had work placed in galleries while still in my teens. Before thirty, I was supporting myself as a full-time artist. My paintings have since appeared through more than fifty galleries, national and international juried exhibitions, museums, and private collections. Three museums have purchased my work. My paintings have received hundreds of honors, including the Art Renewal Center Chairman’s Purchase Award for The Deconstructionist. Happy Homemaker received the Oil Painters of America Most Original Award of Excellence and audience recognition, along with honors through Allied Artists of America and the National Oil and Acrylic Painters’ Society. Other distinctions include Best of Show, Grand Prize, purchase awards, juror’s awards, and finalist placements. Teaching has been central to my career for more than thirty years. For ten years, I served as an adjunct professor of art in three states. I have taught college courses, private students, demonstrations, critiques, and workshops in the United States and Europe. My instruction is practical and studio based. I teach artists to compare shapes, judge proportion, organize values, control color temperature and chroma, understand edges, simplify form, and design the whole canvas before becoming absorbed in details. Composition is a primary subject of this channel. Before opening the paint tubes, I consider balance, dominant directions, focal hierarchy, movement, repetition, negative space, value masses, color distribution, and the path the eye will follow. In my videos, I physically move elements and demonstrate decisions that experienced painters often make silently. Art history is treated as a working studio resource. Sargent, Sorolla, Zorn, Bouguereau, Gérôme, Remington, and other masters show how painters solved problems of drawing, illumination, atmosphere, arrangement, narrative, and paint handling. Museum study reveals transparent shadows, scraped revisions, varied edges, impasto, glazing, and the economy beneath convincing realism. The channel includes portraiture, still life, landscape, plein-air painting, drawing, color mixing, glazing, impasto, value design, and paintings in progress. My life as a painter has always existed alongside a practical love of woodworking. I began working with wood as a teenager, later worked as a professional carpenter, and designed and built my own two-story home at twenty-three. After moving to Mexico, I found genuine mahogany and decided to build the large studio easel I had always wanted. The easel took roughly two months to design and construct by hand. I planned the height, balance, central mast, canvas supports, lifting system, braces, joints, hardware, and moving parts. It had to support small panels, portraits, and large canvases, remain steady during vigorous painting, adjust smoothly, and function as a professional tool. The work involved measuring, cutting, fitting, drilling, sanding, testing, finishing, and repeated problem solving. I did not build the easel as decoration. It now supports my daily studio practice, demonstrations, commissions, works in progress, and educational filming. The same hands that hold my brushes built the structure that holds my paintings. My paintings and career have been referenced in Artists Magazine, American Art Collector, Southwest Art, Fine Art Views, TheArtList, ArtTalk, AskART, exhibition publications, gallery profiles, instructional books, interviews, and museum materials. This channel is for artists, students of realism, art-history enthusiasts, woodworkers, and anyone who values traditional craftsmanship. Painting is learned through observation, comparison, correction, and sustained practice. Subscribe for oil-painting instruction, composition lessons, color demonstrations, art-history discussions, works in progress, portrait and still-life techniques, and the story of a genuine mahogany studio easel built and used by the artist.
