Alberta Premier Smith announces Meta will build a data centre – July 8, 2026

At an event during the Calgary Stampede, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announces that the company Meta plans to build a data centre in the province's Sturgeon County. Meta will also fund the construction of an electrical generation facility for the centre, and improvements to local infrastructure. The project’s timeline has not been stated. Also speaking are Gary Demasi (vice president of data center development & strategy at Meta), Nate Glubish (Alberta's minister of technology and innovation), RJ Sigurdson (Alberta's minister of affordability and utilities), and Alanna Hnatiw (mayor of Sturgeon County).
