செங்கல்பட்டு குட்டை மாடு: கருங்குழி கிடை மதுராந்தகத்திற்கு பக்கத்தில் உள்ள கருங்குழி கிராமத்தில் பெண்கள் வீட்டு வருமானத்திற்காக இந்த மாடுகளை வளர்க்கிறார்கள். சுமாராக 100 மாடுகள் & 3 பொலி காளைகள் இந்த கிடையில இருந்துச்சி. இந்த மாடுகள் எல்லாம் வீட்டு பொம்பளைங்க பக்கத்தில இருக்கற மேய்ச்சல் நிலத்திலேயும் அறுவடை செஞ்ச வயல்களேயும் மேய்ச்சி வளர்த்தது.இந்த மாடுகள் சுமாராக 1 லிட்டர் பால் தினந்தோறும் கொடுக்கும், கோடை காலத்துல மேய்ச்சல் இருக்காதுங்கறதால பால் கறக்குறது இல்லை. மாடு மெய்ச்சிட்டு இருந்த பொம்பளைங்க மாடுகளை பத்தி முன்ன பின்ன தெரியாத என்னோட பேசுறதுக்கு தயங்கித்தான் பேசுனாங்க. இந்த மாட்டு ரகத்தை பத்தியும் அவுங்களுக்கு சரியா சொல்ல தெரியல. மாடுகள் மேய்ச்சிகிட்டு இருந்த வயல்ல தண்ணி இல்லாததால நெல் அறுக்காம வைக்கோல் அறுத்து இருந்தாங்க. சென்னைக்கு பக்கத்துல இப்ப இருக்கிற தண்ணி பற்றாக்குறைலயும் மாடுகளை நல்லா வளர்த்து இருக்காங்க. முன்னாடி இந்த மாடுகள் வண்டி இழுக்கவும் விவசாய வேலைகளுக்கும் பயன்படுத்துனாங்க. இப்ப டிராக்டர் வந்ததாலுயும் இந்த மாடுகள்ல பால் அதிகமா இல்லங்கிறதாலயும் இந்த மாடுகளோட எண்ணிக்கை கொறஞ்சிடுச்சு. சின்ன அளவு நிலம் வச்சி இருக்கிற விவசாயிகளுக்கு இது ரொம்ப ஏத்த மாடு, இந்த மாடுகளை சமையல் அரை கழிவுகளையும் கொஞ்சம் மேய்ச்சியும் வீட்டுல தாராளமா வளர்க்கலாம். இந்த பொம்பளைங்க மாதிரி தனி ஆளுங்க இந்த மாடுகளை வச்சி வளர்கிறதுதான் இன்னும் இந்த மாட்டு இனத்தை அழிஞ்சுபோகம காப்பாத்துது. Sengalpattu Kuttai Maadu: Karunkuzhi herd. In the village Karunkuzhi near Maduranthakam ladies raise these cattle for their household income. In total there were around a 100 Cows and 3 Stud bulls in the herd. These cattle mostly belong to individual households and hand raised by women in their backyard and grazed in the pasture lands & harvested paddy fields nearby. The milk yield ranges around 1 liter per day, and the cows are not milked during the summer months, since the feed is limited. These Women were hesitant and shy to talk about their cattle to a stranger. Also they couldn’t properly explain the phenotype of these cattle. The Paddy fields where the cattle grazed, the crop was harvested for fodder due to the water scarcity. Despite failure of monsoons, these ladies maintained the cattle in good shape with some good muscle mass. Earlier these Sengalpattu Kuttai cattle were also used in farm activities, and to pull carts. Now due to the mechanization and the scanty milk yield of the breed, these cattle are dwindling in numbers. Yet this is a most suited breed for farmers with small land holdings and this can even be raised as a backyard cow with the vegetable waste from the house and nearby grazing. Individual households and the women who still rear these cattle are the last bastion of support for this wonderful unique breed.
