Nits - Memory Tapes #42 - Lenin and the Wounded Angel

"Since 1982 we have done concerts in Finland and almost every time we played in Helsinki, Tampere and Turku and sometimes various smaller towns and festivals. Tampere is an old industrial town with factories and smoke and lakes. The first time I brought my camera, I was filming the statues on the bridge of the Hämeenkatu, the smoking factories, the station with the thin tower hung with exotic words…entering a dark icy poetry. With every new album we returned to Tampere and we stayed in a variety of very Finish hotels like the Tammer with a breakfast and dining room like an old movie set. In 2008 on the album Doing the Dishes we recorded a song called ‘Lenin and the Wounded Angel’ about Lenin who fled to Tampere in 1917 after the failure of the coup and probably saw the painting of Hugo Simberg in the Tampere Cathedral, ‘the wounded Angel’. Two young boys carrying a wounded angel and in the distance the skyline of Tampere. In this video a collection of our Finish friends…Jussi Niemi, the rock journalist…Seppo Pietikäinen, the writer and filmmaker…Kimmo Kajasto, musician and remixer of several Nits songs who is playing a record with only the name of the former President Kekkonen endlessly repeated by a man counting the votes in Parliament. And Tapio Korjus our promoter since the very first concerts in 1982, his production office Rockadillo exist for 50 years this year. Tampere! Tampere! Home of the Holy Smoke!"
