TEDxFortaleza - Maria da Penha - Uma história de vida!

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Maria da Penha is the symbol of the confrontation of domestic and family violence in Brazil. A victim in 1983 of this social blemish by her then husband, Maria da Penha fought for 19 and a half years for the punishment of her aggressor, which only came about through international pressure. In 2006, the Maria da Penha Law was sanctioned, giving a more severe punishment to aggressors and better means for women and their families to live without violence. Today, Maria da Penha works with the Maria da Penha Institute (IMP) through actions aimed at the deconstruction of the machismo culture and to build a society of peace and gender equity.
