Herentals is located in the province of Antwerp in Belgium and is known as the historical capital of what is known as "de Kempen", a very important natural region covering mainly the north-east of Belgium and part of the Netherlands. The medieval prosperity of Herentals is closely linked to the flourishing of the local textile industry. During its heyday in the second half of the 14th century, Herentals cloth merchants covered a sales area that extended over much of Europe. Then, like most European settlements, it was followed by years of war, destruction and plagues, which led to a great economic decline. However, Herentals always had the strength to re-emerge and in particular today we can find here numerous monuments, remnants of those glorious times, such as its impressive Cloth Hall, its 15th century gates and an imposing church.
