Originally founded in 1216 as Do-Ngon Dzong, it was reconstructed in 1641 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to become Trashichho Dzong. It was largely remodeled and expanded in the 1960s by Third King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck
