“I can’t speak highly enough of my six months here,” says Andros Townsend of his time in Thailand so far. Townsend sent shockwaves through Thai football by signing for Kanchanaburi Power ahead of the 2025/26 Thai League 1 season. The former England international winger, who made 291 Premier League appearances for Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace, Everton, Newcastle United and Luton Town, became the highest-profile arrival in Thai football since Robbie Fowler in 2011. After a spell in Turkey with Antalyaspor, the 34-year-old chose the lesser-travelled path to Southeast Asia for the next chapter of his career. “From the first minute, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality [of the Thai League],” says Townsend. The reception off the pitch has been just as striking. “I can’t thank the fans enough for how they’ve taken to me,” he adds. “They’re incredible here. They're so patient and understanding.” Appointed skipper at Kanchanaburi Power, he is embracing his new responsibility. “I’ve never been a captain before, and it’s a huge honour to wear the armband.” Off the pitch, he has taken on another new role: home-schooling his two children. “To spend more quality time with my kids while they’re young, as well as do the thing I love every single day and not lose one ounce of professionalism, it’s been perfect for me."
