Is this church built within an ancient 'druidical circle'? Ysbyty Cynfyn - Wales
In this video we visit the tiny hamlet of Ysbyty Cynfyn to explore three fascinating sites... First, we have a famous example of an early Christian church built within the boundary of a prehistoric stone circle… But some say these stones were actually added to the churchyard wall during restorations in the 1820’s, in an attempt to enhance the impression of a druidical circle and entice profitable tourists! Next, we follow the public footpath around the back of the church and venture down the wooded valley to see Parson’s Bridge... Spanning a stunning gorge cut by the torrent of the River Rheidol. Parson's Bridge also became popular with early tourists, in those days being described as "some wooden planks thrown across the gap!" And finally we climb up to Dolygamfa, described as "One of the finest small Bronze Age cairn-circles in north Ceredigion. Rather than being a true stone circle, the monument would originally have been a cairn or mound of stones encircled by a ring of upright stones." We cannot overstate how enjoyable this walk is. We felt as if we had stepped out of space and time for a moment, to be taken right back into the mindset of early tourists in Wales, as we walked in their footsteps and gazed out at their views. ---------------------------------------------------------------- / coraljackz / coraljackz / coraljackz ---------------------------------------------------------------- Resources/Further Information Website with great collection of references to early tourism and Ysbyty Cynfyn: https://sublimewales.wordpress.com/at... https://archwilio.org.uk - https://coflein.gov.uk/en/site/400479 - https://places.library.wales/ https://archive.org/details/letterson... https://www.dyfedarchaeology.org.uk/ - https://commons.wikimedia.org/ -------------------------------------------------------------- VIDEO CHAPTERS 00:00 Introduction 2:25 Channel Intro 3:00 Church & Standing Stones 18:52 Parsons Bridge 25:28 Dolygamfa Cairn Circle
