The town was quickly built and developed economically due to its status as a royal town and its location at the crossroads of trade routes. To strengthen the loyalty of the town's inhabitants to the royal authority, the king granted various privileges to Budějovice. At the end of the 13th and beginning of the 14th centuries, 2 Catholic churches were built in the town, which was surrounded by a fortress wall. During the next XV century, Budějovice, where the Catholic Church was strong, was a stronghold in the struggle against the Hussites. The town had 4,000 inhabitants and was one of the largest and most important towns in the Czech Kingdom. In the 16th century, the town experienced a strong economic boom, mainly due to silver mining but also due to the development of fishing and salt trade. During this period, the construction of buildings in Budějovice was subordinated to the canons of Renaissance architecture. In 1569, a mint was established in Budějovice, where coins were minted from silver mined in the town's vicinity. The Thirty Years' War did not cause much damage to the town, but in July 1641, a major fire destroyed more than half of the houses. The rebuilding of the town took several decades. The Baroque era significantly changed the appearance of the city. During this period, a number of religious objects were built, as well as the Samson Fountain in the central square, which is one of the symbols of the city. The founding of the Latin Gymnasium, the City Theatre, and the Philosophical Institute in the 18th century contributed to the growth of the city's cultural importance. Under Emperor Joseph II, the Budweiser Bishopric was founded in 1785. In the 19th century, technological progress affected many aspects of the town's life. The first in Europe was the horse railway built between 1825 and 1832, which connected Ceske Budejovice with Linz. During the same period, commercial shipping developed on the Vltava River. Transport development was closely linked to the growth of industry and trade. In 1847, the Hardtmut company (stationery manufacturer under the Koch-i-noor brand) moved the production of pencils and ceramics from Vienna to Budějovice, and the first large factory was established in the town. 1895 the Czech joint-stock brewery, now known as the Budweiser Budvar Brewery, was founded. Until the end of the 19th century, the population of the town and the surrounding villages was mainly German, but gradually, the Czech population began to prevail. Nevertheless, until 1918, the town's burgomasters were Germans. In 1945, after the end of World War II, the Budweiser Germans were deported to West Germany and Austria. In the 20th century, Ceske Budejovice became the economic and cultural capital of South Bohemia. The University of South Bohemia has been operating in Ceske Budejovice since 1991, and the South Bohemian Region of Bohemia has been home to the administration since 2000.
