Psalm 23: The Lord is My Shepherd – A Journey of Peace and Trust (Audio Bible) Psalm 23 is perhaps the most beloved passage in the entire Bible. While many of David’s psalms are filled with cries of distress and complaints, this one is overflowing with comfort, delight, and a deep sense of security in God’s goodness. It is a sanctuary of rest for the weary soul. In this timeless poem, David moves from the image of a sheep resting under the care of a Shepherd to a guest feasting at the table of a King. 1. The Shepherd’s Provision (vv. 1–3) The Relation: David begins with a bold claim: "The LORD is my shepherd." Because of this personal relationship, he concludes, "I shall not want." Rest and Restoration: God leads His people to green pastures and still waters—images of perfect spiritual refreshment and the restoration of the soul. 2. Faith in the Darkest Valley (v. 4) Victory Over Fear: Even when walking through the "valley of the shadow of death," there is no fear. The presence of the Shepherd, along with His rod and staff (symbols of protection and guidance), provides a "cordial" of comfort in the most trying times. 3. The Overflowing Cup (vv. 5–6) Abundance in Adversity: God prepares a table for His children even in the presence of their enemies. Through the anointing of the Spirit and the cup of blessing, the soul is filled with joy unspeakable. An Eternal Home: The psalm concludes with the unwavering assurance that goodness and mercy will pursue the believer every day, leading ultimately to an eternal dwelling in the house of the LORD. The Christ Connection: In Psalm 22, we saw the Great Shepherd dying for His sheep. Here in Psalm 23, we see the sheep receiving the full benefit of that sacrifice—the tender care, protection, and provision of the Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ.
